YSK: to never donate to large corporate charities like the Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey relief. ALWAYS take the time to look up local Houston-area charities so they money actually gets to people instead of lining pockets.
If superstorm Sandy and the Hati earthquake taught us anything, the Red Cross spends the overwhelming majority of funds on self-promotion. Even going so far as to pay workers to drive around empty trucks in circles around town to advertise their brand. Look up local charities that hold themselves to actual standards.
