LPT: Don't use a fear of "ruining the friendship" as an excuse not to date someone. That ruins the friendship.

I lost contact with every friend who ever used that excuse on me within, at most, 2 years.

If you're just not attracted to your friend in that way, be honest. If you are attracted to the person and are just afraid of screwing things up, you're missing out on some great experiences.
