I and more than a few other people I've met have been fooled by high paying jobs that, after taxes and adjusting for higher costs of living, ended up paying significantly less than our previous jobs. Likewise, jobs in areas with lower tax rates and lower costs of living will pay less, but your money will go a lot further.
