When people post on Reddit about problems at work, I see comments about contacting the Human Resources department. This can sometimes be good advice, but I want to caution that HR is not an employee’s “advocate.”
That might have been true in the past, but today most HR departments are structured to protect the employer and indemnify the organization against lawsuits. When HR listens to an employee complaint, their first thought will be, “How does this impact the company?” not “How do I help this employee?” Many times, an employment lawyer or a complaint to the applicable regulatory agency will get you better results.
If you can’t get results, do not expect HR to fix the problem. Get another job.
