YSK: there is a 2.5% penalty to not having a health insurance plan in the United States

2.5% (of your annual income) is fined if you are not covered with a qualifying health care plan. You have three months of grace (small gap) which will not be charged for if you have switched providers. Anything else is prorated in the 12 month period.
