Cigarette smoke and alcohol are a lethal mixture, especially when held together in the mouth. Findings: when subjects drink and smoke simultaneously, a chemical called ethyl nitrite appears in a detectable amount in the breath. This chemical produces mutations, often carcinogenic, in living cells. Heaviest concentrations of the chemical: when the subject holds the alcoholic drink and the smoke in the mouth for as long as 10 seconds.
