It's an economy thing. Retailers want this to happen so they can make a profit (go "into the black") where historically (not long, few decades I think) they [retailers] were "in the red". So why wouldn't they want to be able to have 1 day a year where they could make as much as they could in a month or more. And why wouldn't consumers want a day with [some] savings before a big gift-giving holiday?
