LPT: Always keep your padlocks locked when not in use. That way when you need to use it you have to have the key with you, and you don’t accidentally put a lock on something when you may have forgotten or lost the key.

I learned this the hard way. I used to throw my lock in my gym bag after I was done and would keep it unlocked. I kept my key to my lock on my key ring for my vehicle. I ended up driving my wife’s car and locked all my stuff with no key. I had to cut the lock off. Now I keep the padlock locked when I’m not using it. And depending what I use the lock for I either keep an extra key on a different keychain, or I keep the key in the lock.
