LPT: If you ever need a worker for some odd job, call a local homeless shelter and ask to speak with a case manager for a client referral. Many of my guests are hard working, trustworthy people who were able to get off the streets because of these gigs.
(EDIT) I suggest calling a sober, "long-term" homeless shelter where stays are allowed up to 3+ months--meaning, it is THEIR bed and only their bed, so long the guest is working on their goals and following all rules.
Many of my guests had things happen to them that you have feared would happen to you, but luckily never happened. Losing a home; an ugly divorce; their company went bankrupt and they couldn't find another job; domestic violence, both male and female victims; medical bills left them on the streets.
And yes, substance abuse and mental illness. One of my clients was a severe alcoholic and working a couple of these gigs and saving money played a huge role in his successful recovery and regaining hope and confidence. One of the best people I've known.
