My girlfriend jokes about her type 1 diabetes all the time, so I assumed before that she is at peace with it. I Recently learned that the jokes are a way she copes with her insecurity and sadness about her condition. This assumption probably cost me some good opportunities to be there for her (she's a trooper though).
TL;DR sometimes people joke about themselves to cope with insecurity-- being mindful of this has helped me be more understanding.
