LPT: When buying an expensive gadget, read through support forums in addition to online reviews

I came up with this LPT after a recent, very expensive lesson. I was in the market for a mesh router. There were several options: Google Wifi, Eero, Velop, Orbi come to mind. I ended up purchasing the Orbi for a few reasons:

  1. Online blogs had high praise for it.
  2. I was getting a decent deal at the time of purchase.
  3. Costco stocks it, and I have (misplaced) faith in Costco.

What I should have done instead was to read through the Netgear support forums. Reading through the forums gives you two benefits:

  1. You'll know if there are any widespread problems.
  2. You'll see how the company is reacting to any such problems.

Netgear failed miserably on both counts. Comments I found on several threads would have made me run in the opposite direction. For reference: http://ift.tt/2kfxFql

Some samples for the lazy ones:

It's extremely frustrating that netgear cannot get this straighten out. I was in the middle of doing something very important and my internet disconnected yesterday. This happens constantly throughout the day and I cannot get a stable connection.

Given up. Fed up of the kids and wife calling me at work saying they cant get on the internet. Purchased an Amplify HD. 24 hours and a happy family again. Netgear, you should be embarrassed about this farce which seems to have no end in sight. Good luck everyone.

Bonus free LPT: If you're thinking of buying the Orbi - don't. Save your money and buy something else.
