My boss was throwing out a fairly expensive (over $300) office chair because its hydraulic lift had broken after 3 years of use. After asking if I could have it, I called the manufacturer and found out the chair was under warranty for 7 years. They are sending a new hydraulic lift, along with a video of how to replace the part. A 10 minute phone call and 5 minutes of work are swinging me a very nice chair.
My boss had already bought their replacement chair, but could have saved themselves (or the company) some cash.
