LPT: If you are trading a car in at the dealership, do a full factory reset before you bring it to the dealership to wipe your personal data and garage codes.
We traded our car in at the Big Brand Major local dealership and got a new truck which was awesome. I asked the dealer if I need to wipe the data from the GPS and erase the garage codes. They told us it is part of he trade in and make sure all our data is cleared as a “customer privacy safety protocol”. Two weeks later an SUV came pulling into our driveway that looked just like ours that we just traded in. A guy gets out and walks up asking if I owned a silver SUV and if I still had the floor mats. It was our vehicle we just traded in. Turns out, he just pushed the home button on the GPS and it drove him right back to our house. All our phone numbers, points of interest and even the garage door openers still worked. Thank goodness he was an honest guy and let me factory reset everything but holy shit, he could have driven to our house opened the garage door and took what ever he wanted and then to my parents and to my sisters. Kids schools, what ever. Always factory reset your car before you return it. Look it up online, it took 5 minutes to do it and you won’t have to worry about this ever. I am still shitting my pants over it.
