My sister learned this one the hard way after the pipe leading to her kitchen sink burst and sent water spewing everywhere in her kitchen in her new apartment. So whenever you move into a new place, just ask for the location of the valve or find it yourself in the event of the emergency. Quicker shut off, less water everywhere, less water damage.
