LPT: Sudden Cardiac Arrests (SCA's) cause 350,000 deaths annually and are the leading cause of death among adults. Only 32% of victims get CPR from a bystander. Learn CPR and be cognizant of AED locations in places you frequent.
An SCA can come totally out of the blue and is NOT a heart attack. An SCA is a disruption of the electrical system in the heart, causing a heart beat that is ineffective at pumping blood. If someone (especially a young person) has collapsed, is not breathing and does not have a heart beat, it could be an SCA.
Less than 8% of SCA victims outside of a hospital setting survive. The ONLY thing that can save a person having an SCA is quality CPR and a shock from an AED. Have a plan in place and run through scenarios in your head while you're out or even at home. 88% of SCA's happen while a person is at home, so preparing for such an event will allow you to potentially save someone you love.
SCA's affect people from all walks of life, including healthy and active people, and can come on suddenly and without warning.
You never know when you may be confronted with a situation in which someone's life depends on YOU. Be prepared.
