Between family and friends, I've seen 4 dogs trained this way, and they've all learned quickly: start by hanging a bell from the doorknob and ringing it yourself every time you take them out, then after a week or two start pushing their nose to ring the bell before bringing them out. Pretty soon the association will be strong enough that they'll ring it themselves!
It's nice because the door doesn't get scratched and it's a less aggressive sound than barking--and if you really need it to be quiet you can temporarily remove the bell from the door.
