It's best if you do it before you walk through the snow too much and pack it down. It works for wet snow and dry snow, though it doesn't work as well once you get more than a few inches (yeah Canada/UP/Minnesota/Alaska, we all know you get too much snow for silly tricks like this).
Best $16 I've spent at Home Depot in the past year. No packed snow/ice on my steps, no salt to stick to my dog's feet, and it helps me track less snow into the house.
