LPT: You can make a rat or mouse trap that doesn't endanger your pets, livestock or children using a bucket, a soup tin, some peanut butter and a plank!

If your garden or chicken coop has a problem with vermin, and you don't want to use poison for fear of killing your animals, this is a good way to deal with your mouse or rat problem. Of course, this is only a small scale solution and if you've a large infestation, I would suggest investing in a proper ratting terrier and a cat.

Supplies:

Large Bucket (20L or more)

Dowel – metal is best but wood will work

A soup tin or fizzy drink can, emptied

Peanut butter

A wooden plank

The Process:

  • Drill holes at the top of the bucket, opposite one another

  • Drill holes in the middle of each flat side of the tin

  • Insert a dowel through the bucket holes and the holes in the tin

  • Generously smear the peanut butter on the tin

  • Use the plank to create a ramp for the vermin to have easy access to the bait

  • Fill the bucket with water, enough that the largest rat would be totally submerged and then some.

The end result should look like this
