YSK disaster survivors go through different phases of recovery, and disillusionment should be expected
As all of us watch the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, it is important to recognize that the pattern of disaster survivor psychology is not new. Mental Health Professionals recognize that there are several phases of disaster recovery (some cite four, others six), which includes:
-
Heroic phase - survivors feel altruistic
-
Honeymoon - survivors have a strong sense of connectedness and hold federal/disaster response agencies in high regard
-
Disillusionment - Frustration, anger particularly as the disaster fades from the national attention, or when they perceive federal/disaster agencies do not meet expectations
-
Reconstruction/Recovery - Survivors go through a slow process of getting back to their lives, many times with emotional lows and frustrations
